UNDERSTANDING PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE) LEGISLATIONThe Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at Work Regulations 1992 form part of a series of health & safety regulations implementing EC Directives. They replace number of old & often excessively detailed laws. The effect of the PPE at Work Regulations is to ensure that certain basic duties governing the provision & use of PPE apply to all situations where PPE is required. The Regulations follow sound principles for the effective & economical use of PPE, which all employers should follow. However, many employers are already familiar with these principles, & if they are already applying them in their workplace these Regulations will require them to do little, if anything, more than they do at present. The following pages explain what the Regulations require & give advice on how you can meet these requirements. It is not intended to be a definitive statement of the law. The Regulations came into force on 1 January 1993.
